The fourth grade team of teachers - Mrs. Carlson, Mr. Davis, and Mrs. Story - would like to welcome you to the 2010 - 2011 school year! Please visit our individual web pages for classroom news, assignments, and more! Fourth grade is an exciting and wonderful year for all of us! In addition to trying to instill a love of school and learning, we teachers are also working hard with your child to provide the BEST education possible. We also are dedicated to having YOU, - PARENTS, as involved as possible with this process! Look at all we learn this year: Math: place value, money, time, geometry, adding, subtracting, multiplying, division, data, graphing, fractions, decimals, measurement (standard and metric), probability, problem solving strategies, and MORE! We also do PODs (Problems Of the Day) and visit the computer lab regularly to keep up on the latest technology. Our NYState Test in Mathematics is given in May. Science: We learn about the Scientific Method through experimenting, predicting, and observing! Our units consist of: Land and Water, Motion and Design, Electricity and Magnetism, and Animals. We also do a lot of measurement activities which tie in nicely with our mathematics program. Our NYState test is given in May. This test is an accumulative test which measures students’ progress from kindergarten through 4th grade. ELA (Reading): We work on numerous skills - too many to mention! We use guided reading with centers and use the Step Up to Writing program. Our NYState test in ELA is given in May. Social Studies: New York, what a wonderful place! Our curriculum is based on our great state, and history as seen living in NY state. We begin with geography, and work our way through the first people (hunter-gatherers), to Native Americans, to early European explorers, to being a Dutch, then English colony, to the American Revolution, and finally to history happening here (as Americans), from the Civil War to the Industrial Revolution, from the Erie Canal to Wall Street, and then to modern day government! Spelling: Each teacher has their own agenda on this! You will need to refer to your child’s home room teacher as to the work and assignments. We all do agree that the program we are working with now fits students writing skills, and is more conducive to learning than the previous programs we have had. So, there you have it! I hope you will be right there learning with all of us! It will be an exciting, productive year! -Mrs. Carlson, Mr. Davis, Mrs. Story
